Surfing from a Ubuntu live CD

...which for most of you sounds exactly like "Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla."

I am trying not to over do it today, activity wise.

Last night was the deadline for tree trimming untill August, so I was out there in the front yard after dark, reaching as high as I could, cutting off some offending limbs. I felt it later on that's for sure.

All Toni's Linux talk has got me hankering a bit again, so late this afternoon I downloaded the latest Ubuntu version and created a CD run version of it. Very nice, in the functional sense.

It found my WiFi network and set it up. The fonts don't look as bad as they did even a year ago. The 4gig usb drive plugged in and was immediately useful. The SD Card in it's slot is nicely recognized and the partitioned drive where I store all my data is accessible to me from here.

The usb keyboard I use plugged right in and is wroking fine without even a hickup.

So, not bad at all

Especially for a system I am effectively running from my DVD rom.

:)

  1. What do you mean by "deadline for tree trimming"? You mean nature's deadline or is there some city bylaw I'm not aware of?

  2. Well, a city thing and for Elm trees only and since I don't know what kind of tree it is out there I was trying to play my cards right.

A police car drove by halfway through the exercise and didn't stop so I figured Cut away baby.

  3. I currently run Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron on my laptop, and am actually sat here this very minute wearing a limited edition Hardy Heron T-shirt! It's a good operating system, I like it.

  6. Is that some kind of African band/dialect?

  7. SharonK, close, it's in fact:

"Ubuntu is an African word meaning 'Humanity to others', or 'I am what I am because of who we all are'. The Ubuntu distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world."

It's also a really cool Linux distribution, aiming to be 'Linux for human beings'.

  8. Glad you're having fun with it. Hope the cold etc is better soon - mine's been bad 2 weeks today, but this morning for the first time I don't feel dreadful. Good old antibiotics and prayer from those that love me.
