Johanna's safe

Today Johanna, my 14 year old daughter, was hit by a car on her way to school.

She prepared to leave for her bike ride to Riverside for her afternoon exam, and I was thinking of her and all that was ahead of her. This is her last year in Jr. High, next fall she starts at highschool. As she went out the door she called out "Bye" and I replied "Bye, I'm praying for you" and off she went. I stopped eating my lunch and called her name out to God silently. I asked for his blessing for her, for a clear head as she wrote the exam, for his hand of protection, and asking that he simply go with her into the day and her life. The kinda things I pray for my kids when they have a tough one ahead.

I left for the office, but before I got there my cell rang, with the news from Lauralea, Johanna had been hit while crossing a street on a walk light.

The driver was turning right on a red light, and, as we do, looked left to check the oncoming traffic. It was clear so he began to accelerate and turn right. Johanna thought he saw her as he had slowed down, so she proceeded through the intersection. She was probably in his blind spot, so the bumper connected with her thigh and pushed her over on her side. He was able to stop, so the tires didn't reach her.

When I caught up with her, she could hardly walk, her new jeans and the top she had just made were torn.

We went to the Dr. and he reported no broken bones. Just some very bad bruising and some cuts and scrapes on her leg and stomach.

It was a very emotional and exhausting day. I'm so glad it's done, and I'm so glad she's still here.

"Thank you father for one more day to live and breathe and love."
