Church's Out For Summer

The Holy Observer is reporting that:

Shutdown Season: Willow Creek Community Church Will Close its Doors for the Summer

SOUTH BARRINGTON, IL ? In perhaps the most extreme example to date of churches halting ministries during the traditionally slower summer months, Willow Creek Community Church ? one of America's prototypical mega-churches ? has decided to close its doors until after Labor Day...

This could be a good idea. Everybody would be ready to go in September, eager to be together again! And the pastoral staff would get the time to recuperate and prep for fall's activities. This would see a decrease in stress related ailments for pastors!!

  1. And we thought it was bad when in North Carolina they cancelled church for a bit of snow!

But you are right this could work - or it could at least cause us to rethink what church is and what are the forms we have to have to be church.

But are they saying that church has to be big enough or it's not worth meeting? Wonder if everything they do has to cost effective?

  3. Ah, satire. So wonderful, yet so often misunderstood. My brother tells of an email circulated around his church by someone in leadership. The email spoke of an "article" in which it was said that the Harry Potter books were leading kids to worship Satan, or something to that effect. My brother did some research and it turned out to be an article from "The Onion", one of the "original" satirical news sources.

I sometimes wonder if churches shouldn't offer classes about the internet, because in my experience it seems like evangelicals will believe anything they read on the internet or on chain-letters emailed to them. (Not offense to Linea intended).

  4. Marc, No offense taken. I didn't read very carefully and I will blame it on my brains which are addled from packing.

  5. There is a church by my house that does close for the summer season. I do find it quite odd that its 'not worth it' to stay open in the slow season. It really is sad that some churches main focus is on the almighty dollar.

  6. Maybe its just good stewardship of their resources?
