Nouwen on living daily

"Often we want to be able to see into the future. We say, "How will next year be for me? Where will I be five or ten years from now?" There are no answers to these questions. Mostly we have just enough light to see the next step: what we have to do in the coming hour or the following day. The art of living is to enjoy what we can see and not complain about what remains in the dark. When we are able to take the next step with the trust that we will have enough light for the step that follows, we can walk through life with joy and be surprised at how far we go. Let's rejoice in the little light we carry and not ask for the great beam that would take all shadows away."

  1. Oh I loved that! From which book of his are you quoting? I don't think I've read that before!

  2. I don't know if this is where Randall is getting his quotes from, but I know there is a Henri Nouwen publication called "Bread for the Journey", which is a collection of 365 daily readings. I know in the past the daily reading in the book has lined up with quotes Randall has posted around the same date.

Having said that, there might also be an emailing list or a website that posts them.

  5. and occassional we are given a torch which will show a light for a few weeks/months even two/three years. but we also do not know the outcome of such steps.

We just have to Trust and walk, no matter how we feel.

At present I just want to hide from God, but i also know that there is no-where I can hide.

  6. It is God's mercy to us that we only see a little way ahead. He gives grace for today, not for tomorrow. If we knew all that is to come then we might not have the strength to deal with it, but he will always give us strength for today.

It is a line of a hymn (Great is thy Faithfulness) rather than a scripture, but years ago God planted in me the phrase 'Grace for today & bright hope for tomorrow'. It is true & has been a great comfort to me many times.
