Homelessness as a sport.

  1. I like it. Raising money for homelessness while teaching people to "walk a mile" in someone else's shoes. Best after one chilly night on the street, we'd view the whole world differently.

  2. My husband did an all night street walk in Calgary a few years ago sponsored by the Mustard Seed. He said what got to him was realizing that while he did suffer in the -25C cold all night,(standing around in cheap bars etc. that allowed the homeless adults to hang around for warmth until closing time, looking for cardboard bits and alley space with warm air vents to grab a few minutes of sleep and checking downtown garbage cans for food), in the back of his mind he knew it was a 1 night thing and he would return to his warm house in the morning. He tried to imagine doing what he had to do that night as a lifestyle and it broke his heart. It certainly changed some of his ministry focus.

  3. I honestly didn't know what to make of it.

I appreciated the intent of it, the heart of it. But it seems a little, like it makes light of homelessness?

Kinda like come see what it's like to be homeless by sleeping in a box for a night.

    I don't know.

I think those opportunities like Susan mentions can be shaping for people and give them a chance to see what it's like, all the while knowing that the next day you can go back.

Maybe this is a start towards that kind of thing.
